Tar Heel Track and Field Again Sweeps U.S. Collegiate Series

Chapel Hill, N.C. - On a rain-soaked track, the University of North Carolina track and field team won both the men's and women's meets at the U.S. Track and Field Collegiate Series in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday. The four-team meet included Connecticut, Georgetown and UNC-Wilmington. The women totaled 242 points and the men finished with 219 points for the wins.
Sal Gigante, once again, led the way for the Tar Heel men's team. Gigante broke his own UNC school record and won the hammer with an NCAA provisional mark of 202-7. Gigante also won the discus with a throw of 166-1. Kestutis Celiesius also earned an NCAA provisional qualification by throwing 224-1 in the javelin.
Blair Woodward had an outstanding day for Carolina by winning the 110m hurdles in 15.02 and the long jump with a mark of 23-3 1/4. Woodward also placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 47-3 3/4. Other winners for UNC included Joseph Handy in the 200m in 21.75, Jacobe Foster in the 400m in 48.00, Jeff Ellis in the 400m hurdles in 51.49, Jonathan Dean in the high jump at 6-4, Brent Callaway in the pole vault at 15-6, Kevin Crittendon in the triple jump with a mark of 48-9 and Ian Douglas in the shot put with a throw of 56-2.
The UNC women's team had three multi-event winners. Lutisha Shittu in the 100m (12.25) and the 100m hurdles (13.96), Jill Pedretti in the shot put (46-0 3/4) and discus (156-5) and Ola Sesay in the long jump (20-3 3/4) and triple jump (38-0 1/4). Sesay also took second in the 100m hurdles in 14.31. UNC's other winners included Janelle Billingslea in the 200m in 25.07, Edi Ntuen in the 400m in 55.51, Bobbie Jo Munson in the 800m in 2:09.63, Beth George in the 1500m in 4:33.76, Heather Tanner in the 3000m in 9:56.52, DeAnne Davis in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.70 and Joy Ganes in the high jump with a mark of 5-6.
Carolina track and field will next compete in the ACC Outdoor Championships, which will be held April 21-22 in Durham, N.C.
