Watkins, Perruquet Lead UNC Women's Swimmers Past Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Christy Watkins and Jessi Perruquet each won two individual events and swam on two winning relays as 11th-ranked North Carolina defeated 12th-ranked Virginia 171-129 Saturday afternoon in a close and competitive dual meet at the Aquatics and Fitness Center. Carolina won its 10th dual meet in a row and improved to 10-1 on the season, remaining undefeated in the ACC at 5-0. The Cavaliers lost their first dual meet of the season and fell to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.
The Tar Heels won nine of the first 11 events of the meet and then withstood a Virginia rally which saw the Cavaliers win three of the last five events.
UNC swimmers and divers achieved two career bests and 11 other season bests and won 11 of 16 events in the meet. The Tar Heels were aided by wins in both relay events.
Watkins and Perruquet each swam on UNC's winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. Perruquet had wins in the 100-yard freestyle at 50.26 and the 200-yard freestyle at 1:47.43. Watkins won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.21 and the 100-yard butterfly in 56.20.
Other individual winners for Carolina were Lizzy Bruce in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.87), Kelly Weeks in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.96), Gia Santoro in one-meter diving (season best score of 269.03 points), Becky Acker in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.22) and Kathleen Quinn in the 200-yard backstroke (season best time of 2:00.30.
The Tar Heels won both relay events. Carolina clocked a season best time of 1:43.62 as Janna Turner, Becky Acker, Christy Watkins and Jessi Perruquet swam on the winning relay. UNC also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:24.71 with Kelly Weeks, Christy Watkins, Virginia Hanson and Jessi Perruquet swimmg on that unit.
Virginia was led with five different individual winners--Rachael Burke, Cara Lane, Alison Sharp, Mirjana Bosevska and Brielle White.
UNC had two career best times in the meet as Lizzy Bruce went 2:17.34 in the 200-yard breaststroke and Kathleen Quinn went 2:05.69 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Other season bests were turned in by Quinn in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.66, Jennifer Rehm in the one-meter diving with 253.80 points, Virginia Hanson in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.71, Meghan Nystrand in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:04.18, Emily Carroll in the 100-yard butterfly at 56.75, Gia Santoro in three-meter diving with 295.88, Elizabeth Misiti in one-meter diving with 253.73 points and Emily Carroll in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.16.
The Tar Heels will conclude their 2002-03 dual meet season next Saturday when UNC plays host to 15th-ranked Maryland and Georgia Tech at Koury Natatorium at 11 a.m.
