O'Connor, Ramos Grab National Titles At U.S. Open

North Carolina freshman Austin O'Connor won the UWW Junior Freestyle national title Saturday at the 2018 U.S. Open at South Point Arena in Las Vegas. O'Connor, who redshirted in 2017-18, beat Penn State freshman Brady Berge 2-2 on criteria the claim the junior national championship at 70 kg. UNC volunteer assistant coach Tony Ramos was a senior national winner, claiming the 57 kg title with a 2-2 victory on criteria over Daton Fix.
O'Connor won what was considered the toughest bracket in the junior event, beating top-seeded David Carr 6-5 in the semis before the tight win over Berge in the final. Carr was a Junior World bronze medalist in 2016 while Berge was on the 2015 Cadet World team.
Ramos picked up his third U.S. Open title in the last four years with a takedown of Fix in the second period. The win gives the 2014 NCAA champ a spot in the WTT qualifier next month in Rochester, Minnesota. O'Connor has also booked a spot in the Rochester, where he can earn his way onto the Junior World team.
Three other Tar Heels won matches in the junior event - Jaime Hernandez (65 kg) and Chasen Blair (86 kg) advanced to the second stage of the consolation quarterfinals, while Nick Mosco (86 kg) advanced to the second stage of the consolation round of 16.
