Freshman One of Two Players to Play Bogey-Free Today
Tar Heel freshman Dougie Ergood shot a 3-under-par 68 for the second consecutive day and finished tied for fifth at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge Sunday at the U of L Golf Club.
Carolina shot 5 over in the final round and finished the three-day event at 284-282-289–855 (3 over par). Duke won the tournament at 37 under 815. Alex Smalley of Duke won the individual competition at 16 under 197.
Louisville (-20), Wake Forest (-13), South Florida (8) and Mississippi State (-2) finished in the top five.
Ergood tied for fifth at 6 under 207. He opened with an even-par 71 on Friday, then shot back-to-back 68s on the weekend. The Mount Laurel, N.J., native was 1 over par through the fifth hole in the second round, then made seven birdies and no bogeys over his next 31 holes. That included three birdies and no bogeys in Sunday's final round. He was one of two players in the field today without a bogey.
Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) shot a 1 over 71 today and tied for 18th at 1 under 212. Ryan Gerard (Raleigh, N.C.) tied for 47th at 4 over, Preyer Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) tied for 58th at 6 over and Ryan Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) tied for 77th at 12 over.
"Overall, it wasn't a great tournament for us," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Teams could score well on Friday before the wind kicked up, but we didn't take advantage of that and created a huge hole for ourselves.
"Dougie played good, solid, tough golf, especially yesterday and today as the conditions became more difficult. Coach (Matt) Clark walked the last 36 holes with Dougie and the two of them worked well together. Dougie is a fierce competitor who is very strong mentally."
Carolina returns to action Sept. 24-25 at the Old Town Collegiate in Winston-Salem.
