Tar Heels Fourth After 36 Holes in Winston-Salem
University of North Carolina junior Austin Hitt and sophomore Ryan Gerard tied their collegiate best rounds with a 66 and 67, respectively, to lead the Tar Heels to fourth place after 36 holes Monday at the Old Town Collegiate hosted by Wake Forest at the Old Town Club.
The Demon Deacons lead the tournament at 23 under par. Louisville is second at -19, Yale is third at -10, UNC is fourth at -8 and Notre Dame is fifth at 7 under.
Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) is tied for sixth place at 5-under-135 after shooting 69 and 66 in Monday's two rounds. Gerard (Raleigh, N.C.) is tied for eighth at 4-under-136 after opening with a 69 and following up with a 67.
Hitt made six birdies and suffered two bogeys en route to his 66, while Gerard played bogey-free and had three birdies in shooting his second-round 67.
Wake Forest's Eric Bae fired consecutive 64s to take the individual lead at 12-under-128.
Carolina freshman Dougie Ergood (Mount Laurel, N.J.) is tied for 29th. He shot a 3-under-67 in round one, but triple bogeyed the 220-yard, par-3 11th hole in the afternoon and settled for a 3-over-73.
Joshua Martin (Pinehurst, N.C.) shot 71 in both rounds and is tied for 40th. Preyer Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) opened with an even-par 70 and shot 4 over in round two. UNC freshman Ryan Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) is tied for 43rd at 3 over playing as an individual entry.
The third round is scheduled for Tuesday.
