Sophomore Fires Bogey-Free 66 in 2nd Round
University of North Carolina sophomore Ryan Burnett shot a bogey-free, 6-under-par 66 in the second round Saturday to take a two-stroke lead at the Rod Myers Invitational at the Washington and Duke Golf Club.
Burnett shot 69-66 and is 9-under-135 after 36 holes. The third and final round is Sunday morning. The Lafayette, Calif., native was one of two players in the field to shoot both rounds on Saturday in the 60s. He has a two-shot edge on Louisville's John Murphy and the host Blue Devils' Adrien Pendaries.
Duke leads the team competition at 21 under, six shots clear of Wake Forest. The Tar Heels are seventh at 6 over par. UNC began the day with an 11-over-299, then rebounded in the afternoon session with a 5-under-par 283.
The Tar Heels teed off in the morning on the more challenging back nine and were 14 over par after just four holes. They played the remaining 14 holes in 3 under.
Burnett birdied the 10th hole to begin his day before taking a seven on the par-5 11th hole. He then parred the next 10 holes and was 1 over through 12. However, he then birdied four of the next six holes to finish the opening round at 3-under-69 and made six birdies and a dozen pars in the second round to post a 66.
Ryan Gerard (Raleigh) shot a 2-under-70 in the second round and is 2 over for the tournament. Austin Greaser (Vandalia, Ohio) is 5 over and Dougie Ergood (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) are both 11 over.
