Jason Bernard

Jason Bernard, a Clemson graduate and former member of the United States Marines, is in his first season as assistant rowing coach at the University of North Carolina.

Bernard came to Chapel Hill from Clemson, where he was the novice women’s coach in 2015-16 and head coach of the men’s rowing club team from 2015-21. The club was named Clemson’s Undergraduate Student Organization of the Year in 2021.

The Tiger men won the varsity eight at the 2019 Head of the Hooch and the team points trophy in the collegiate division at the Head of the South.

In 2019, he led Clemson’s varsity four to a berth in the Grand Final and fifth-place overall finish at the ARCA National Championship. That was the best finish by Clemson in its men’s club team’s history.

Bernard majored in accounting at Clemson, earning his degree in 2017, and spent two-plus years as an accountant and fiscal analyst at his alma mater. He also taught high school math and finance in Greenville for a year.

From 2008-12, Bernard served in the Marines, including two tours conducting combat operations as an infantry machine gunner and vehicle commander in Afghanistan.
