Tar Heels Rally In Round 1 of Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina finished round one of the 42nd Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational just six shots out of the lead at 1-over par and tied for seventh. Ava Berger shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for seventh to lead the Tar Heels on the day.
Carolina found themselves 10 shots out of the lead after nine holes, but shot 5-under over the final six to get within six shots of Duke, who leads the field at 5-under par.
The rally began when Brynn Walker knocked in the tournament's only eagle on 13, and it was birdie play the rest of the way for the Tar Heels including one each by Bergner and Walker on the final hole. Brynn shot 1-under-par 71 on the day and is in a tie for 13th.
Bryana Nguyen shot a birdie on 17 as part of the rally to finish a 2-over and tied for 41st. Kelly Whaley shot two birdies over the final six holes and also finished at 2-over par on the day to round out the scoring. Mariana Ocano shot a 9-over 81 and is tied for 92nd.
Competing as an individual, Roshnee Sharma had the best round of her career shooting a 1-over 73. She is tied for 34th. Cheni Xu shot an 8-over 80 and Clementina Rodriguez shot a 9-over 81 as individuals.
Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, the tournament's individual medalist in 2016, and Molly Skapik of Louisville lead the field at 6-under par 66.
ROUND 2: The individuals will begin teeing off at 8:51 a.m. from hole 10, and Carolina's starting five will begin teeing off from hole 1 at 9:09. They will play alongside Wake Forest and Ohio State.
