Heels and Pack Tied for the Lead
Senior Jose Montaño had an ace in the opening round and sophomore Austin Hitt shot a second-round 67 to lead the University of North Carolina to a share of the lead after 36 holes at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate played Monday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
The Tar Heels and host NC State shot identical rounds of 280-280 for 560 totals and are 16-under par with a final 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
Montaño fired a hole-in-one with a 5 iron on the 194-yard, par-3 14th hole. He is tied for fourth place at 4-under par with fellow UNC senior William Register. Hitt is in third after shooting even par in round one, then going 5 under for the second 18. Senior Ben Griffin is 10th at -3 and junior Joshua Martin is tied for 25th at even.
The Tar Heels have four players in the top 10, while the Pack has one in the top 10 and three in the top 20. Stephen Franken led NC State with rounds of 66 and 65 and stands at 13-under 131, seven strokes in the lead.
Campbell is six shots behind UNC and NC State at -10. Loyola (Md.) is the other team in the field of 14 teams under par at -4.
Hitt matched the 67 he shot a year ago as his low round as a freshman at the Sea Best Invitational and NCAA Stanford Regional. The Longwood, Fla., native shot a 31 on the front side of his second round today with birdies on one, two, four, six and seven. He gave a shot back on 12 before a birdie on 15 capped his round at 5 under.
Register and Montaño led the Tar Heels in the first round with 69s. Register had four birdies and only one bogey; Montaño had an up-and-down round with four birdies, an eagle, an ace, three bogeys and a double to finish at -3 for the first 18 holes.
"Overall we were solid today and there were many positives, including Jose's hole out for eagle (on 10) followed by a hole-in-one on 14," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Our starters shot even par or better in all 10 combined rounds today.
"The thing I'm most pleased about is the way we finished a long 36-hole day. We went through a bit of a lull in the middle of the second round but finished strong. We shot 5-under as a team over the final four holes. That shows grit. Tomorrow will be a good test and a great opportunity. We're looking forward to it."
