October 22, 2017 | Men's Soccer
BLACKSBURG, Virginia - The North Carolina men's soccer team is the ACC Coastal Division champions for the third year in a row. The fourth-ranked Tar Heels scored four times in the second half of a 4-0 dismantling at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon.
No. 1 in the latest NCAA RPI, North Carolina (13-2-1, 5-1-1 ACC) secured all three points in its second to last conference match of the season. The Tar Heels have 16 points on seven matches, four points clear of Virginia and five of Notre Dame, who UNC will face Friday night in Cary, North Carolina at 7 p.m.
Senior Zach Wright scored 70 seconds into the second half to begin the onslaught for the Tar Heels. The Smithville, Texas, native now has three goals to go with eight assists. A combination of a Jelani Pieters flick and a Cam Lindley header gave Wright the opportunity to bury the first goal of the match.
Reserve Raul Aguilera opened his collegiate scoring account with the first goal of his rookie campaign in the 56th minute. Jack Skahan earned an assist on the play. Aguilera was inserted into the match just over two minutes before he hit the back of the net to make it 2-0 Tar Heels.
Chicago Fire Academy products Mauricio Pineda and Lindley scored 18 second apart in the 63rd minute to break the match wide open, 4-0, in favor of the visitors from Chapel Hill.
It was Pineda's second of the season, while Lindley is now up to seven goals and 10 assists in 2017. Lindley is the first Carolina player to reach double figures in assists since Enzo Martinez distributed 11 back in the national championship season of 2011.
Freshman keeper Alec Smir earned his fourth clean sheet of the season, and improved to 10-1-1 on the season. The Tar Heels have allowed only three goals in their last seven matches.
UNC improves to 16-3-1 all-time against Virginia Tech, who falls to 7-8 overall and 2-5 against the ACC.
Carolina will celebrate Senior Day on Friday before kick off against Notre Dame at WakeMed Soccer Park.
