Register Finishes Third, Four in Top 15
NC State played the final three holes in 3 under par which resulted in a six-shot swing to lead the hosts to a two-stroke victory over the University of North Carolina on Tuesday in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Â
NC State shot even-par 288 in today's final round and a 16-under 848 for the tournament. Carolina was +2 today and 14-under-850 for the three rounds. Campbell was third at -1.
Â
The Tar Heels and Wolfpack entered the day tied at -16 after Monday's first two rounds. Carolina led for most of the final round, but managed only six pars, one bogey and a double bogey on the 16th through 18th holes.
Â
Stephen Franken, who won medalist honors by eight strokes, picked up one of NC State's late birdies on the par-4 16th hole. Franken won the event by shooting 66-65-70 for a 15-under-201. He accounted for 15 of NC State's 16 strokes under par for the tournament.
Â
Carolina placed two players in the top 10 and four in the top 15 (not including Raleigh native Preyer Fountain, who played the event as an individual entrant and shot a career-best 67 today to tie for 15th place).
Â
"We went back and forth with NC State all day long," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "We had a positive swing in our favor on the 15th hole where our guys executed some incredible golf shots under pressure. However, NC State executed better than us on the final three holes and that was the difference.
Â
"Our guys were poised and focused today but we came up short. We've already had productive conversations about how we can learn from today and how we can all be better. We're eager to compete again, and at home, in just a few days."
Â
Senior William Register had the low score among UNC's starters today with a 70 and finished third at 6-under-210. It was Register's best finish in an event since he won the Liberty Spring Invitational as a freshman.
Â
Austin Hitt tied for sixth after a final round 73, Jose Montaño was 12th after a 74, Ben Griffin tied for 15th at even par 216, and Joshua Martin tied for 22nd after a final round 73. Montaño eagled the 549-yard, par-5 15th hole. The senior from Bolivia had two eagles and a hole-in-one in the tournament.
Â
Freshman Ryan Gerard of Raleigh also competed as an individual. He shot a 75 on Tuesday, but was 3 under over his final nine holes. Fountain had a team-high eight birdies in the final round en route to 67.
