Carolina Dominates James Madison, 6-0
October 3, 2017 | Men's Soccer
CARY, North Carolina - Cam Lindley and Giovanni Montesdeoca each scored two goals in leading No. 4 North Carolina to a 6-0 victory over James Madison on Tuesday night from WakeMed Soccer Park.
North Carolina registers its ninth win in a row to improve to 11-1 on the season, while James Madison falls to 4-4-3.
The visiting Dukes started fast with the first two shots of the match, but Carolina slowly gained control of the match as the first 45 minutes progressed. The Tar Heels gobbled up corner after corner near the end of the half and capitalized on its fourth attempt in the 39th minute.
Lindley placed a perfect ball to the head of Alan Winn and he did the rest in scoring his ACC-leading eighth of the season.
The second half saw Carolina display its precision on the counter attack. After ringing a rocket off the post in the 49th minute, Lindley hit the back of the net off a delicate feed from Zach Wright in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0 Tar Heels.
Wright appeared to have a jet pack firmly attached to his back when he flew past a JMU defender and fed Lindley for his eighth assist of the season.
Lindley made it a double by converting from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute. Jelani Pieters was pulled down in the box to setup the second goal of the night for the Carmel, Indiana, native.
Wright added to his fine evening with a goal in the 72nd minute. Freshman Lucas del Rosario picked off a clearing attempt by a JMU defender and found Wright on the right side for his second goal of 2017.
Montesdeoca picked up his third and fourth goals of the year in the 85th and 90th minute to close out the scoring festivities.
Freshman keeper Alec Sir made one save to register his second clean sheet in as many matches. The Tar Heel defense has three-straight shutouts and has allowed only one goal in their last four contests.
Carolina hosts No. 2 Wake Forest in a matchup of the top-2 clubs in the ACC. Both teams will enter the match leading their respective ACC divisions with 12 points on four matches.
