Carlexa Fevry, Firoz George and Connor Ritchey won bronze at the Temple Collegiate Open
Three Tar Heels Earn Bronze At Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Three Tar Heels earned bronze medals as the UNC fencing squads competed against large and competitive fields over the weekend at the Temple Collegiate Open, Carolina's first collegiate event of the fall. Fencing in Philadelphia, the Carolina women were in action on Saturday and the men on Sunday.
In women's foil, sophomore Carlexa Fevry tied for third in a field of 62, leading three Tar Heels in the top 12. Sophomore Wei Chee Chen placed 10th, and junior Sydney Persing tied for 11th. Freshman Sylvia Zhu placed 52nd then competed in the consolation, finishing fourth.
In women's epee, freshman Georgina Summers placed ninth and sophomore Justine de Grasse was 10th in a field of 79. Senior Samantha Galina finished 13th and junior Erin O'Neill placed 27th.
In women's sabre, senior Meredith Bozentka was sixth overall in a field of 56 and sophomore Jackie Litynski placed 10th. Three freshmen also fenced for the Tar Heels: Clara Somfelean placed 17th, Isabel Bravo 34th and Alexis Lynch 37th.
In men's action on Sunday, the Tar Heels again had numerous top-12 finishes, with the strongest performances in sabre. Junior Connor Ritchey and freshman Firoz George tied for the bronze, and freshman Bernard Witek placed 11th. After that, junior Matthew Garrelick was 15th, sophomore Samuel Tate was 36th, senior Griffin Morehead was 40th and sophomore Alex Matthew was 41st in a field of 76.
In epee, freshman Andrew Fulmer led UNC with a 10th place finish in a field of 95, the largest of any weapon. Sophomore Jacob Henkels placed 17th, freshman Charlie Roth was 20th, freshman Michael Facci was 41st and freshman Andrew Fregenal tied for 86th.
In foil, sophomore Brian Lee placed 12th in the field of 83. Freshman Charles Chow was 16th, senior Connor Costa tied for 17th, freshman Gabe Maia Lima placed 26th, junior Ian Head was 26th and junior Richard Cho placed 31st.

Next up for UNC is the season's first team competition of the season, the Elite Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. Team dual meets are schedule for Saturday and Sunday. UNC will meet Penn, Northwestern, Cornell and Air Force on Saturday and Ohio State, Cleveland State, Notre Dame and New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sunday.
