Scoles, Evans To File For Medical Hardship Waivers
October 31, 2017 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Due to concussions suffered at the start of the season, sophomores Julia Scoles and Mariah Evans will file for medical hardship waivers and will not return to the court in 2017. Scoles played in the first two matches of 2017, while Evans has not suited up for a match this fall. Both student-athletes will maintain three years of remaining playing eligibility.
"This has been a difficult time period for Julia and Mariah," said head coach Joe Sagula. "I am happy with the improvements they have made during these last few months. We had hopes that they could return this season, but we have all learned there are so many individual factors that go into each person's recovery. It is a challenge, but everyone has showed such patience during this process."
The 2016 ACC and AVCA East Coast Region Freshman of the Year, Scoles tallied 305 kills, 259 digs, 54 blocks and a team-high 32 services aces last season. An outside hitter from Mooresville, North Carolina, Scoles finished in the top five all time among UNC freshmen in kills, attempts, hitting percentage and aces per set. Following her outstanding rookie campaign, she was selected to the 2017 U.S. Collegiate National Team that trained and competed in Minneapolis in June.
Evans played in all 33 matches as one of two setters in a 6-2 rotation last season. She finished her rookie campaign ranked seventh all time among UNC freshmen in total assists, tallying 503 to go with 168 digs and a .478 hitting percentage. The Colorado Springs native went out with a bang, putting up season highs with 27 assists and 12 digs against No. 8 UCLA at NCAA Regionals.
"We appreciate all the hard work that our medical staff, athletic trainers and academic resources staff have put into supporting both Julia and Mariah as well as the support and concern shown from all our Carolina fans," said Sagula. "We certainly miss their level of experience on the court and we all look forward to seeing them healthy and able to return to their athletic careers at Carolina in the very near future."
