UNC Swimming Great Surhoff To Be Inducted Into Maryland Sports HOF

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A star-studded class of professional and amateur standouts will be honored when the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame (MDSAHOF) conducts its 58^th induction ceremony on November 9 at Martin's West in Baltimore.

Leading the class from a Tar Heel viewpoint is Polly Winde Surhoff, a talented collegiate and international swimmer who attended the University of North Carolina from 1982-86 and swam for fellow MDSAHOF inductee Frank Comfort, who coached at Carolina from 1977-2006.

The other inductees include Keion Carpenter (football), Darryl Gee (soccer), Jeff Nelson (baseball), Tommy Polley (football), Thori Staples Bryan (soccer), Brian Westbrook (football).

Surhoff, an Ellicott City native, started setting swimming records as an eight-year-old and this past June, at age 52 she completed her 13^th Great Chesapeake Bay swim, placing third. In between she was a high school and college All-America swimmer, member of multiple U.S. Swimming National Team and rebounded from missing the Olympics by one place in 1984 by winning her first national title that summer. She and her husband, former Baltimore Oriole and fellow UNC alumnus B.J. Surhoff, founded Pathfinders for Autism, the state's largest autism organization.

This year's inductees include the youngest U.S. Olympic soccer player, three former NFL players who went on to cross the goal line as community leaders, a former Yankee who ranks second among major league pitchers with 53 postseason appearances, and two women who starred at Carolina college before achieving national glory, one in the water, one on the soccer pitch.

The November 9 induction ceremony will be held at Martin's West, 6817 Dogwood Road, Baltimore. Md. 21244. Tickets are $85 per person and include dinner and open bar during cocktail hour for the program, which is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
