Blumberg and Kelly To Play For Titles In Tulsa
October 9, 2017 | Men's Tennis
UNC sophomore William Blumberg will attempt Monday to become just the fifth player to win singles and doubles titles in the same year at the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
On Sunday Blumberg upset top-seeded Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State to reach the singles finals. Blumberg won the first set in a tiebreaker and Torpegaard came back to win on a tiebreaker in the second. Finally Blumberg swept to victory with slightly more breathing room in the third set, winning 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3.
He'll face UCLA's Martin Redlicki Monday in the singles final, which is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Central time.
In doubles, Blumberg and senior Robert Kelly took on Baylor's Will Little and Johannes Schretter. Despite it being Blumberg's second match of the day, the Tar Heels rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win.
They'll play Florida's Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez Monday in the final, which will follow the singles championship. Kelly is making his second appearance in the doubles final – he also played for the title in 2015 with partner Brett Clark.
