Disaster Relief Jamboree Sunday
November 1, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL—The Dean E. Smith Center will welcome home three head coaches with strong ties to Carolina Basketball in a unique exhibition series on Sunday, November 5, at 3 p.m. to raise money for disaster relief efforts in North Carolina.
Â
Head coach Roy Williams and the Tar Heels will play a series of brief exhibition games against three in-state opponents, each of whom are led by either former UNC players and/or coaches.
Â
Cost of admission is $20 with the proceeds going to the governor's Disaster Relief Fund.
Â
The Tar Heels are joined by ECU, UNCG and UNCW in the four-team jamboree. Each school will play either 13- or 14-minute periods against each of the other three schools. The first 10 minutes of each period will be running time. Each of the four school will play a total of 40 minutes.
Â
"We need a great turnout from our fans, from ECU, UNCG and UNCW, our students, college basketball fans, and just people who want to make a difference," says Roy Williams. "We have a great big building – let's get a great turnout and help out a lot of our fellow North Carolinians who have been devastated by these storms."
Â
The schedule is as follows:
Â
Period 1
North Carolina vs. ECU (13 minutes)
Â
Period 2
UNCG vs. UNCW (13 minutes)
Â
Period 3
ECU vs. UNCW (13 minutes)
Â
Period 4
North Carolina vs. UNCG (13 minutes)
Â
Period 5
ECU vs. UNCW (14 minutes)
Â
Period 6
North Carolina vs. UNCWÂ (14 minutes)
Â
ECU's head coach is former Tar Heel captain Jeff Lebo, who was an outstanding scorer, shooter and passer from 1985-89. Williams was an assistant coach under Dean Smith in Lebo's first three seasons.
Â
UNCG is coached by Wes Miller, who played for Williams at UNC, earned a national championship ring in 2005 and started at shooting guard for the 2007 ACC champions.
Â
UNCW is under the direction of first-year head coach C.B. McGrath, who played for Coach Williams at Kansas and was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels from 2003-17, helping Carolina win three national championships. McGrath's staff includes Joe Wolf and Jackie Manuel. Wolf was a first-team All-ACC performer and first-round NBA selection in 1987; Manuel was a lockdown defender and team captain in 2005 when the Tar Heels won the NCAA title.
Â
"It's just fun to have Coach Lebo, Coach Miller and Coach McGrath bring their teams to Chapel Hill for some basketball," says Williams, "but the best part is we get to help people who really need some assistance. The money we raise will go to people affected by the storms that have hit our country, not just this year, but in the last couple of years. When natural disasters hit like they did with Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the series of hurricanes that did so much damage in the past two months, the negative effects impact our communities for several years. That's why we are working with the governor's Disaster Relief Fund.
Â
"We're going to play most of the periods on a running clock, because with four teams we don't want fans to think it will be a long scrimmage. But with the start of our seasons so close, this will be a great opportunity for each of our programs to get a good look at what we have."
