November 10, 2017 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Brian Cernoch, a standout tennis player from Rockville, Md., has signed a letter of intent to play for North Carolina. One of the top junior players in the country, he has been ranked as high as No. 7 by tennisrecruiting.net and has been as high as No. 40 in the ITF world rankings.
"We're excited to have Brian become a Tar Heel," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "He's a talented player, a strong student and a person who will fit right in with our program. We believe he'll thrive in Chapel Hill and we look forward to welcoming him to the Carolina family."
Cernoch will bring to Chapel Hill a great deal of experience both nationally and internationally. In 2017 he played in the boys' draws at the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. He has wins over players ranked in the world top 10 in each of the last three years.
A boys' 14s National Hard Courts Champion, he was a Grade A doubles champion and a Grade 1 singles finalist. Cernoch was a singles finalist at the Easter Bowl in 16s and a doubles finalist there in 18s. He won the Carson doubles title in 16s and was a finalist in 18s.
"I ultimately chose UNC because from the moment I arrived I felt like I was a part of the family," Cernoch said. "The coaches made me feel very welcomed. My dream is to one day play professional tennis at the top level and I felt there is no better place to prepare me for that than at UNC. I am extremely excited to start my next chapter in Chapel Hill. GO HEELS! "
