Burston Leads Tar Heels On Opening Day of Purdue Invitational

UNC divers excel on opening night of Purdue Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - Ten divers from the University of North Carolina swimming and diving program began competition Thursday at the 2017 Purdue University Invitational at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatics Center.
Thursday's competition featured the men's one-meter diving and the women's three-meter diving competition.
"All the divers did great today. They did extremely well in prelims however we came back into finals a little flat," said UNC diving coach Abel Sanchez. "This has been a great meet for us so far. We now know what we need to work on going into our championship season. We have men's three-meter and women's one-meter tomorrow."
The top Tar Heel finisher on Thursday was redshirt junior Sean Burston, who captured fifth place in one-meter springboard diving. He led five Tar Heel men in the finals of the event. Burtson finished fifth with 327.25 points after qualifying third in the prelims with a slightly lower score of 323.45. Freshman Greg Duncan placed sixth in both the prelims and the finals, scoring 310.95 points in the morning and 326.90 points at night.
Sophomore Bryan Allen finished eighth with 314.80 points, moving up two spots in the final after qualifying 10th with 291.70 points. Sophomores Devin Bellamy and Andrew Owsiany placed 11th and 12th, respectively, scoring 283 and 278.3 points. They flip flopped in the final from their preliminary spots when Owsiany scored 284.85 points and Bellamy earned 274.55 points.
On the women's side, three Tar Heels reached the finals as junior Maria Lohman placed eighth with 274.7 points and senior Elissa Dawson was ninth with 270.7 points. They had qualified 1-2 in the morning with scores of 342.6 and 333.85, respectively.
Qian Yi Pang placed 11th in both the morning and evening sessions, scoring 267.4 and 251.05 points, respectively. A pair of freshmen, Taylor Hockenberry and Emma McPeeters, were 21st and 22nd in the event with 223.45 points and 218.50 points.
Friday's events will feature the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter diving competitions.
