Sanford Continues Run At ITA Fall Championships

PALM DESERT, California - North Carolina freshman Alle Sanford picked up a second-round victory on Thursday to highlight the Tar Heels' effort on Thursday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championship.
Sanford, seeded No. 5 in the Main Draw, won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, over No. 75 Olivia Hauger of Cal. The rookie from Westerville, Ohio, is now 12-2 this fall in singles action. Her tally includes the Oracle ITA Masters title back in September in Southern California.
Sanford now faces off with 9th seed and No. 11 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami in a Round of 16 match on Friday at 2 p.m. ET. Perez-Somarriba earned All-America status this past spring as a freshman after reaching the Final Four of the NCAA Singles Championship. The winner advances to a quarterfinal match on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey (No. 2) and Sanford (No. 5) are the highest-remaining seeds alive in the draw.
No. 42 Alexa Graham had her hands full with No. 6 and 14th-seed Kate Fahey of Michigan in a second-round match on Thursday morning. Graham won the second set, but was unable to overcome Fahey in falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
In the consolation bracket, No. 4 Sara Daavettila defeated Tamara Arnold, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, while No. 22 Jessie Aney lost 6-2, 6-1 to Cal's Anna Bright.
Daavettila now takes on fellow ACC foe Natalie Novotna of Virginia Tech in the second round on Friday at 2:15 p.m. ET. A win would send her into a quarterfinal match at 6 p.m. ET.
