UNC Freshman Jiang Named ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Alvin Jiang has been tabbed as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week Tuesday for the period from October 30-November 5.
Freshman Alvin Jiang won two individual events and led off the victorious 200-yard medley relay as the Tar Heels upset #19 Virginia Tech 166-134, delivering UNC's first dual meet win of the campaign.
Jiang led off the 200-yard medley relay with the fastest 50-yard backstroke split in the field with a time of 22.27. UNC won the relay by a comfortable 1.54 seconds over the Virginia Tech "A" relay team and in the process posted the fastest time in the event for UNC this season.
Jiang won the 100-yard butterfly in 48.15, winning the event by 1.14 seconds over teammate Patrick Cusick. Jiang's time was an NCAA "B" cut and just .02 of a second off his season best time of 48.13 which he swam against South Carolina.
Jiang blew away the field in the 100-yard backstroke, winning in a time of 46.83 seconds, 3.13 seconds faster than second place Sean Workman of Virginia Tech. The time was Jiang's career best time, easily eclipsing his previous career best of 48.17. It was also an NCAA "B" cut. The time also moved him into fifth place amongst all-time performers in Carolina history. He currently ranks sixth in the NCAA Division I ranks amongst top times for the 2017-18 school year.
