De-Stress Fest Balances Preparation For Finals

Day of fun and relaxation sent Tar Heels into exam period
Coffee, career planning and a costumed canine all were part of De-Stress Fest activities Thursday as Tar Heel student-athletes prepared for the start of final exams. Loudermilk Center was a hub of activity throughout the day and well into the night as students studied, snacked and tried to keep stress levels low.
Â
"This tradition is five years old now, and we expand it a little every year," said Korie Sawyer, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development and the event's primary planner. "Our goal is to provide a variety of things, so that students can take advantage of whatever appeals to them. They're all working hard, and it's great for them to be able to take some breaks during a stressful time."
Â
Coffee and snacks were available all day in Loudermilk, and students could rest any time in a classroom converted to a relaxation room, complete with aromatherapy and coloring books. Throughout the morning, those looking ahead to summer internships or networking at home over break could meet with a counselor from University Career Services, Christy Dunston, for guidance and advice.
Â
Seniors graduating this month had the opportunity to have senior photos and professional headshots taken, courtesy of the Rams Club. The afternoon's schedule included a yoga class and a trail mix bar.
Â
A highlight was the visit from REMINGTON, a golden retriever who is familiar to Tar Heels as the Rehabilitative Facility Dog for the baseball program. Wearing a Santa suit, he visited Loudermilk's study areas to give out candy canes and enjoy lots of petting from students.
Â
In the evening, Deloitte sponsored a behavioral interview prep session, helping student-athletes practice interview skills as part of the company's summer internship program.
Â
As is tradition, the day's finale was a late-night pancake and bacon dinner in the Blue Zone. Nearly 400 Tar Heels attended, consuming more than 1,500 pancakes, a record for the event. First-year letterwinners picked up their letter jackets, and first-year students got snack bags, courtesy of their mentors in the Richard A. Baddour Carolina Leadership Academy Navigate program.
Â
"We expect our students to excel academically as they do athletically, and we know this can be a stressful time of the semester for them," said UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham, who joined in at the pancake dinner. "We want to send them into finals with some relaxation and fun, and wish them all a safe and happy holiday break."
Â
"I always look forward to De-Stress Fest," said Bryana Nguyen, a senior on the women's golf team. "It is a great day to get some studying done, but also relax in between finals. The pancakes are always a hit!"
