Tar Heels Fall At No. 15 UNI On Criteria
December 18, 2017 | Wrestling
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- North Carolina and No. 15 Northern Iowa split 10 bouts but the host Panthers won the dual on tiebreaker criteria 17-16Â Monday night at West Gym. The Tar Heels rallied with wins from Danny Chaid and Cory Daniel in the final two matches of the night to tie the team score at 16-16, but the Panthers had more total match points on the night to get the team victory. Zach Sherman, Troy Heilmann and Kennedy Monday were also winners for Carolina, which falls to 2-3 in its last action before Christmas.
Carolina and UNI (2-1) traded decisions in the first two matches of the night, with No. 19 Sherman taking care of Rudy Yates at 133 pounds for the Tar Heels. No. 7 Josh Alber then put the Panthers back in front with a 12-4 major decision at 141 before the marquee matchup of the night at 149.
No. 4 Heilmann and No. 6 Max Thomsen met for the second time this month and once again staged an evenly matched contest. And just as he did at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Heilmann scored the only takedown of the bout to win 3-2. The victory pushed Heilmann's record to 15-1 on the year and was his fifth over a ranked opponent and his second in as many days.
Heilmann's momentum carried over to 157 for a second straight dual as well, with Monday continuing his run of bonus-point wins. The redshirt freshman got late back points against Logan Ryan to close the first period and upped his advantage to 8-3 after two. With the riding time point secure, Monday began to push for the major decision, getting the necessary takedown in the final 15 seconds to seal a 13-5 victory and put Carolina up 10-7 at intermission.
UNI reclaimed the team lead with three straight wins highlighted by No. 7 Taylor Lujan's major decision at 174.Â
Trailing 16-10 after the Panthers were docked a point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the 184 bout, UNC got a pair of gritty wins from its two heavyweights. Chaid used a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal to knock off No. 17 Jacob Holschlag 5-3 at 197 before Daniel's 5-4 win over Carter Isley at 285. Daniel's late takedown in the second gave him a 4-3 lead, and an impressive ride to start the third secured the riding time point. That proved to be decisive as Isley escaped late in the third but couldn't get to Daniel in the final seconds.
With the team score tied at 16-16 and neither team winning by fall on the night, the third criterion of match points was utilized to break the deadlock, and the dual was awarded to UNI.Â
Carolina will have 10 days off before returning to action for the South Beach Duals on Dec. 29 and 30.
