North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams
Opening Statement
"I said congratulations to Mike [Young]. I remember a hundred years ago I had Mike at North Carolina's basketball camp when I was a coach. He's done a great job there and it's a great win for them. I'm not pleased at all. I don't think we came out with the passion we needed to have. We got a big win on Sunday and we are fat and happy and think that things are just going to be so easy for us. We talk about not turning the ball over and we turn the ball over three times in the first four minutes. It ended up, for the game, they get 16 points off turnovers to our eight. We got it down to a one possession game a couple of times. Cam [Johnson] missed an open shot, I think Kenny [Williams] missed an open shot, Joel [Berry] had one right in front of me that I thought was good, but we missed them. We got that team with 10 fouls and we are shooting free throws early in the half and we don't take the ball to the bucket. Bad movement, bad defense, bad coaching. We got fat and happy. It was a disgusting thing for me the entire game. My own self, and the team. We called a time out and I said, 'guy's we only have two fouls, so we want to trap and trap again and we've got to foul. We can't waste all the clock,' and we wasted 15 seconds and I am standing over there jumping up and down like an idiot. Terrible, terrible coaching job."
Â
On takeaway from this game
"We got to by-god be ready to play and not act like we are prima donnas, that we are North Carolina and we can walk out there and the other team is going to fold. That team out worked us. You think about Sunday we were very fortunate. What did they do when we pressed? They threw the ball to us twice. That team tonight didn't help us. We didn't make the plays."
Â
On Fletcher Magee
"He's a fantastic shooter. He was 0-3 or 0-4 I think at the half. I said, 'Guy's he's the leading three-point shooter in the nation. He had made 90 threes coming into the game shooting 57.8 percent, he's gonna come after you.' And he did. But those were good shots for him. Kenny I think did a nice job on him, but you can't walk out there and think things are going to be easy, you can't turn the daggum basketball over like we did to start the game."
Â
On returning to practice
"Thankfully we got somebody that looks into the rules because I wanted to come back and practice at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning but we can't. You got to give them eight hours off, that's the rule."
Â
On Cameron Johnson's return
"I was asking too much. I shouldn't even put Cam back in the game at the end. In my mind eight to ten minutes was all I was going to give him. He played 17 minutes, I only gave him six in the first half. I gave him more minutes than I wanted to. He was winded out there at the end."
Â
On assessing the play of Cameron Johnson
"He made a couple shots, I think he missed one free throw. He made his free throws, made one three-pointer, took it to the basket, made a nice bounce pass to Luke his first possession. But again, I was thinking eight to ten minutes was all I was going to give him but he felt really good and I talked to Doug [Halverson] and Doug felt like he was fine. They went small at that time. They only played one big guy, 33, down the stretch they didn't play 33 and 50 both together and we needed to match up with them."Â
Wofford Head Coach Mike Young
On winning in a tough atmosphere
Â
"Mountain top. I grew up in Virginia, and this was my team. Coach [Dean] Smith and see all those banners up there and I can think back to [John] Kuester and [Walter] Davis and [Phil] Ford and all those guys. And to bring a team in here, you know not only compete and fight and do some really good things but win, that is a mouthful. A mountain top experience and awfully proud of our boys."
Â
On responding to Carolina's comeback
Â
"It wasn't just making shots. I thought we fought and were able to grind out some defensive possessions which is such a big deal when you are playing against the [Joel] Berry's and the [Theo] Pinson's and the [Luke] Mayes' of the world. High character guys, you know [Fletcher] Magee, [Cameron] Jackson, a lot of those guys have been in a lot of big games. Nothing like that, I thought that crowd, you've seen ACC people in here and it is full. It's crazy, but I thought that it was a great atmosphere. I was thrilled to death. I got a little 4-foot-5 130-pound point guard out there as a freshman, and he is competing his tail off. He had a huge runner around the lane line opposite our bench there in the second half. Big plays, you don't get out of, on the road I don't care where you are, places without showing some toughness and resolve and making a big play. That might be a defensive rebound or a shot contest to help propel you to a win"
Â
On Fletcher Magee's Performance
Â
"He was not typical Fletcher [Magee]. I mean his numbers have been staggering, and people are starting to take notice here. He missed one around the five-minute mark, and I think it was like a layup to him and he missed it. Maybe I am playing him too many minutes. It is just so hard to get him off the floor. Twenty-seven points in this environment, and Kenny Williams and [Theo] Pinson, those guys can guard you. Willingness to get bodies on him with screens, willingness and a toughness to run our stuff with pace and timing. That kid makes you look pretty good sometimes. He just rises up and makes a shot. He certainly did that a couple of times tonight.

On what it means that Coach Williams gave him extended minutes
Â
"I've been around college basketball for a little bit now. This is my fourth year, so it's just a little bit of extra experience. I think he knows that and I think that might be the reason for the extra minutes. I just, with those minutes, I wanted to play my hardest. I'm still trying to get my legs back under me, my arms back under me. This is just something that I need to build off of, that the team needs to build off of and we'll take this lesson and move on."
Â
On playing in the UNC offense for the first time
Â
"It's something that I definitely need to get used to, and something I really feel like I was getting ahold of leading up to when I got injured. Being out for a handful of weeks is tough on the body and on the mind in the sense that you kind of have to re-work yourself back in the system and kind of pick up on plays that you missed while you were out, all of that. Just learning a new offense and having a setback like that, it's a little bit challenging. But it's something you have to work through."
Â
Kenny Williams, Junior, Guard
On the game
"We were flat. I don't know another way to put it. We came out lackluster, lackadaisical and they came out ready to fight. They brought the fight to us and we didn't bring it back until our backs were against the wall. At that point, it was too late. We didn't make the plays that we needed to make and they made all the plays they needed to make. The difference was the effort. They played a lot harder than us."Â
On getting too comfortable after Tennessee win
"We came in after Tennessee, all satisfied as if our season was made and we relaxed a little bit. You can see it tonight. The energy wasn't there. Like he [Coach Williams] said, fat and happy. We have to stay hungry."Â
Joel Berry, Senior, Guard
On getting too comfortable after Tennessee win
"We got that win against Tennessee and everybody just got happy. I was a little nervous coming in tonight. I knew Wofford was a good team. They have good players and I just don't want us to get complacent because last year we didn't do that. It is just hard when you see a team like this that is not as talented as us but you think you are going to go out there and just beat them. That is what our team thought tonight and we showed it out there on the court. I agree with Coach and we have to realize who we are. We just made their season tonight. I know they have goals they want to reach but if they look back and say they beat North Carolina that just made their night, made their season and that is what they wanted to do."Â
On why shots were not falling
"We had some shots that were close to the basket and didn't go in. You really can't do anything about that but on the defensive end they hit some tough shots. We gave them some wide-open shots but you can't really do anything about that. We did not come out with any effort and it showed. Whether the ball is going in or not you can always give effort and I don't think we had that tonight."
