CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC Department of Athletics hosted an event for a local Brownie troop on November 13, helping the troop earn its "Fair Play" badge and focusing on the importance of sports for females. UNC staffers and a panel of eight female student-athletes talked with the troop about the Brownies' athletic experiences and how girls can show their strength in athletics, academics and other outlets.
Featured speakers included Nicki Moore, Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator; Molly Caffelle, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach; Korie Sawyer, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development; and Rachel Manor, Sports Nutritionist. Manor and Caffelle demonstrated to the troop the importance of fueling healthy bodies and utilizing training to become stronger athletes. Moore taught the troop about the history of Title IX and its impact on women's athletics programs as well as the psychological and emotional benefits of playing a sport.
          Â
"Playing a sport does tend to empower girls and women," Moore told the troop. "And what that means is it helps you to be fully yourself in the world, and the world needs you all to be fully yourself."
Â
The panel of female student-athletes answered the troop's questions on the impact sports has had on their lives and on their experiences competing at UNC. The panel included Nicole Greene (Track and Field), Ellen Minaudo (Rowing), Caroline Baldwin (Swimming), Marie McCool (Lacrosse), Leah Murray (Softball), Bryana Nguyen (Golf), Gab Major (Field Hockey) and Samantha Galina (Fencing). Common sentiments among the athletes were that sports has enabled them to develop strong friendships with other athletes, overcome individual barriers and compete at national and international levels. The troop's excitement for sports reverberated through the room as they talked about their own experiences on the field, in the pool and on the court, and even showed off how many push-ups they could do.
