ACC freshman of year wraps up tremendous season with another award.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina freshman forward Alessia Russo was named Thursday to the second-team All-America squad named by the United Soccer Coaches, formerly the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Russo's All-America accolade capped a brilliant freshman season in which the Kent, England native scored nine goals and added two assists for 20 points. She was Carolina's leading goal scorer this season. She played in 19 games, starting 18 at forward and scoring a team-leading six game-winning goals as the Tar Heels finished 17-3-2 overall and 8-0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Russo was the most valuable player of the 2017 ACC Tournament as Carolina won its first conference championship since 2009. She was named first-team All-ACC, ACC All-Freshman, first team United Soccer Coaches Association All-East Region and she shared the ACC Freshman of the Year Award.
