December 8, 2017 | Men's Soccer
CHESTER, Pennsylvania - No. 2 seed Indiana scored early in the second half to earn a 1-0 victory over No. 3 North Carolina in a NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup semifinal match Friday night between two of the powerhouse programs of the sport.
Indiana broke the deadlock in the 50th minute by converting a corner kick early in the second half. Trevor Swartz served a ball to the far post that Andrew Gutman tapped in for his seventh goal of the season.
Moments after the goal and now forced to come from behind for the first time in the NCAA Championship, Mark Salas and first team All-American Cam Lindley registered shots in a short span of 70 seconds, with Lindley's being on frame.
Alan Winn, named a second team All-American on Thursday, turned and fired from inside the 18-yard box, but keeper Trey Muse dove to his right to make another save for the Hoosiers in the 72nd minute.
Still probing the Indiana final third in the final minute of the match, senior Zach Wright beat his man down the right flank and found the foot of freshman Lucas del Rosario but his shot slipped just wide of the near post.
In the first half, Carolina keeper James Pyle made a diving save in the final minute of the first half to preserve a scoreless first 45 minutes.
North Carolina held a slight 8-7 shot advantage in the match.
Over the last 10 seasons, UNC leads all programs in College Cup appearances (6) and NCAA Championship victories (23).
