GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Tar Heels have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, announced Monday by the league. Senior Ronnie Schneider, junior Robert Kelly, sophomore Blaine Boyden and freshman William Blumberg earned the honor.
To be considered for the team, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 cumulatively and for the most recent semester. Athletic achievements during the season also are taken into consideration for team selection.
All four UNC honorees had outstanding 2017 seasons on the court in addition to achieving in the classroom.
Schneider, from Bloomington, Ind., graduated in May after majoring in business administration in Kenan-Flagler Business School. He was the 2017 ITA National Senior Player of the Year and earned All-ACC honors for the fourth year in a row.
Kelly, from Chapel Hill, is a rising senior majoring in global studies. He earned All-America honors in doubles for the second year in a row and was named to the All-NCAA Tournament team at both No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Boyden, from Raleigh, is a rising junior majoring in business. He was named to the All-NCAA Tournament team at No. 6 singles after clinching two of the biggest wins in school history, in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals.
Blumberg, from Greenwich, Conn., is a rising sophomore. In his first season of collegiate tennis, he finished as the NCAA singles runner-up and earned All-America honors in both doubles and singles. He was the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, the ITA National Rookie of the Year and the ACC Freshman of the Year.
The entire UNC team had a stellar year athletically and academically. Carolina reached the NCAA team championship match for the first time in school history, won a program-record 29 matches and ranked No. 3 in the final ITA poll, the team's highest-ever at the end of a season. Meanwhile, the team earned a cumulative GPA of 3.25 in the spring semester, the highest in five years.
