June 28, 2017 | Track & Field
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six members of the University of North Carolina track and field teams have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, announced Wednesday by the league. Seniors RJ Alowonle and Sarah Howard, junior Kenny Selmon, and sophomores Darryl Shaw, Anna Eaton and Nicole Greene earned the honor.
To be considered for the team, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least a 3.0 for the previous semester and cumulatively during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Alowonle, from Cottage Grove, Minnesota, was one of three members of the 2017 All-ACC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Academic Team also named CoSIDA Academic All-America for the current academic year. Alowonle graduated in May with a degree in business administration and represented the track and field team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. He was the first male since 1988 from the Carolina track and frilled program to be named Academic All-America. A five-time ACC champion, he earned first-team All-ACC honors at the ACC Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles and competed at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event.
Howard, from Dublin, Georgia, was also one of three members of the 2017 All-ACC Women's Academic Team to be named Academic All-America for the current academic year – the first woman Tar Heel since 2007. She also graduated in May with degrees in biology and religion. She was selected as a Top 10 Scholar-Athlete, recognizing her grade point average as one of the 10 highest among graduating seniors. She went on to earn first-team All-ACC honors in the shot put and compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and cap her career with second-team All-America honors in the shot put. She is a seven-time All-ACC Academic honoree and a Phi Beta Kappa honors society inductee.
Selmon, from Mableton, Georgia, is a rising senior majoring in business administration in the Kenan-Flagler Business School. He was the ACC Champion in the 400 hurdles and earned first-team All-America honors after placing fourth and breaking a 22-year-old school record in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Shaw, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is a rising junior majoring in media and journalism. He earned first-team All-ACC honors in the triple jump after finishing third at the ACC Championships. Shaw also competed in the triple jump at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminary Round, finishing 18th after initially being seeded 24th heading into the meet.
Eaton, from Cary, North Carolina, is a rising junior majoring in business administration in the Kenan-Flagler Business School. Eaton competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the pole vault.
Greene, from Ponta Vedra, Florida, is a rising junior majoring in exercise and sport science. She earned first-team All-ACC honors after finishing second in the high jump at the ACC Championships. She also competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the high jump.
Every member of the 2017 All-ACC Men's Track and Field Academic Team earned All-America and/or All-ACC honors, competed in the NCAA finals or was selected as an ACC Performer of the Week during the regular season.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
