Senior takes sixth in event at U.S. Nationals.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Caroline Baldwin, a rising senior swimmer at the University of North Carolina, broke her own school record in the 100-meter backstroke Friday at the 2017 Phillips 66 U.S. Swimming National Championships and World Championships Trials at the IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
Â
Baldwin earned her way into her third championship finals of the week after earlier earning spots in the finals of the 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter backstroke. The Westfield, N.J., native qualified sixth on Friday, taking almost a full second off her previous career best and school record time by going 1:00.34. She had set the school mark earlier this month with a time of 1:01.15 at the Santa Clara Arena Pro Series in California. Baldwin nearly duplicated her preliminary performance in the finals of the event Friday night, finishing sixth in a time of 1:00.37.
Â
Hellen Moffitt, a 2017 Tar Heel alumnus and multiple event first-team All-America, continued her outstanding national championships performance as she placed 21st in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:01.59, which eclipsed her career best time of 1:01.67. Moffitt is a native of Alexandria, Va.
Â
Two other Tar Heels finished in the Top 30 in their events. Rising senior Henry Campbell of Manassas, Va., placed 19th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter freestyle as he clocked a time of 3:55.36, more than a second faster than his previous personal best time of 3:56.60. Rising senior Michael McBryan of Doylestown, Pa., also swam on Friday and placed 30th in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:03.72. That was just off his career best time of 1:03.50.
Â
The final day of the 2017 National Championships and World Championships Trials is Saturday with several more Tar Heels in action on the final day of the meet.
