UNC wraps up action at U.S. Nationals
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Caroline Baldwin, a rising senior swimmer at the University of North Carolina, broke the five-year-old University long course record in the 50-meter freestyle Saturday night on the final day of competition at the 2017 Phillips 66 U.S. Swimming National Championships and World Championships Trials at the IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
It was Baldwin's second school long course record in two days as she had taken down her own school record in the 100-meter backstroke Friday morning.
Baldwin finished 10th in the 50-meter freestyle in a time of 25.19 seconds. The previous school record was 25.37 seconds set by Erika Acuff Erndl in 2012. Baldwin had qualified 11th in the event in Saturday's preliminaries with a time of 25.47 seconds, well under her previous career best time of 25.71.
Baldwin was one of three Tar Heels to finish in the Top 40 of the event. Hellen Moffitt of Alexandria, Va., placed 25th in a time of 25.85 seconds. Moffitt is a 2017 UNC alumna and a multiple event first-team All-America during her career. Incoming freshman Maddie Smith of Lake Forest, Ill., was 40th in a career best time of 26.11 (previous best was 26.23). Rising sophomore Brooke Bauer was 66th in a time of 26.45. Bauer is a native of Louisville, Ky.
Ashley Twichell, who trains for UNC coaches Rich DeSelm, Duncan Sherrard, Sean Quinn and Christy Garth with the North Carolina Aquatic Club based in Chapel Hill, was third in the women's 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 16:10.63.
Baldwin set school records this week in the 100-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle while Moffitt set a new University mark in the 100-meter butterfly.
Saturday was the final day of the 2017 National Championships and World Championships Trials. The World Championships are later this month in Budapest, Hungary. UNC head coach Rich DeSelm is serving on the U.S. World Championships coaching staff for the open water swimming events.
