CHAPEL HILL—The latest edition of the Carolina Insider podcast includes an extensive interview with Roy Williams.
In the nearly hour-long interview, the three-time national champion discusses a few unappreciated key plays from the 2017 title win over Gonzaga, his busy summer schedule and recruiting, and the incoming freshmen who will join the 2017-18 team.
That team will also have a more unexpected addition, as Pitt transfer Cameron Johnson will join the Tar Heels.
"Getting Cameron Johnson here was the most exhausting thing I've ever gone through," Williams told Jones Angell and Adam Lucas on the podcast. "It was long and drawn out and it wasn't pleasant at times."
With Johnson on the roster, Carolina adds a player who scored 24 points against the Tar Heels in the Smith Center while playing for the Panthers last year.
"He got 24 against us, so I'd like him to get 24 against someone else," Williams said. "We're losing Justin Jackson, our leading scorer, so who will step up and score those points and get those minutes? Cam has shown he can do things at this level. I don't think he's just a shooter. I think he's a scorer. I think we want him to be working hard to get on the backboards and be a defensive player. He really wanted to come to North Carolina. There was a lot of stuff he had to go through."
Johnson will join a team with an unusual roster makeup for a Williams-coached team, as the Tar Heels will be stacked on the perimeter but have plenty of question marks in the post.
"This year's team will be strong on the perimeter and will be the most inexperienced team I've ever had up front," Williams said. "Someone will have to step up."
Other topics discussed by the head coach of the Tar Heels include watching nine former Tar Heels play in the NBA Summer League in a 31-hour period in Las Vegas earlier this summer, the unexpected UNC fandom of NFL wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, drive-through workers who combine Dean Smith and Roy Williams, and much more.
Williams is the latest in a line of stellar guests on the Carolina Insider podcast. Previous interviews have included Marcus Paige, Theo Pinson, Hubert Davis and much more. To subscribe, click here.
