Tar Heels Announce 2017-18 Non-Conference Schedule
July 21, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina men's basketball team will open the 2017-18 regular season on November 10th at the Dean E. Smith Center against Northern Iowa, one of 14 non-ACC games the defending NCAA champions will play prior to the start of conference action.
The Tar Heels will play seven non-conference games at home, facing UNI, Bucknell (Nov. 15), Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (Nov. 29), Tulane (Dec. 3), Western Carolina (Dec. 6), Wofford (Dec. 20), and an exhibition game against Barton College (Oct. 27).
Â
Carolina will also play seven games away from home, including four neutral-site contests and three away games. The Tar Heels play at Stanford (Nov. 20), at Davidson (Dec. 1 in the Spectrum Center in Charlotte) and at Tennessee (Dec. 17).
Â
UNC is one of 16 teams playing in Portland, Ore., Thanksgiving week in PK80 to honor Nike's Phil Knight. (Carolina's game against Bucknell at the Smith Center is an early-round game in PK80.) UNC begins play in Portland on Thanksgiving Day against the University of Portland. The Tar Heels will play either Arkansas or Oklahoma on November 24th and either Connecticut, Georgetown, Michigan State or Oregon on November 26th.
Â
The final non-conference game is against Ohio State in the fourth season of the CBS Sports Classic. UNC will face the Buckeyes on December 23rd in New Orleans. Carolina beat Ohio State on Dec. 20, 2014, in Chicago in year one of the CBS Sports Classic.
Â
As currently scheduled, this would mark the first time UNC has played all of its regular-season non-conference games prior to Christmas.
Â
The Atlantic Coast Conference will announce the league schedule and times and TV designations for all games later in the summer. The Tar Heels will play home-and-home games against Duke, Clemson, NC State and Notre Dame; home games against Boston College, Georgia Tech, Miami, Pitt and Wake Forest; and away games at Florida State, Louisville, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
