Tar Heels Conclude Outstanding Week of Swimming At World Championships

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY – Swimmers associated with the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Aquatic Club wrapped up an excellent week of competition Monday at the 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The competition in all phases of aquatics events, held on a biannual basis, wraps up this coming weekend.

On the heels of some excellent finishes in open water swimming last week, incoming freshman Dimitrios Dimitrou of Athens, Greece, a 2016 Olympian, competed in the 400-meter freestyle on Sunday and the 200-meter freestyle on Monday.   He placed 38th in the 400 meters with a time of 3:56.58. He was 47th in the 200 meters Tuesday with a time of 1:50.40, just six tenths of a second off his career best time.

In the FINA World Championships open water swimming competition last week, North Carolina Aquatic Club swimmers Ashley Twichell and Chip Peterson combined to bring home three Top 5 finishes for the U.S. Team. The duo is coached at NCAC by UNC head coach Rich DeSelm and his assistant coaches Duncan Sherrard, Sean Quinn and Christy Garth.

Twichell won a gold medal in women's five-meter kilometer open water swimming on July 19. Read details of that event at this link.

The following day, Twichell won a silver medal for the U.S. Team as a member of the combined male/female five-kilometer relay. Read details of that event at this link.

On Friday, 2010 Tar Heel alumnus Chip Peterson placed fifth in the 25 kilometer open water swimming event for men. It was the first time he had swum the event in his career and he was the highest ranking American in the field. Read details of that event at this link.

Looming in the future for Carolina swimming and diving this summer is the 2017 U.S. Diving National Championships at Ohio State University's McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion from August 8-12. Complete meet details on that event can be found at this link.

Diving coach Abel Sanchez will have four Tar Heel divers competing in the meet. Junior Sean Burston is slated for the one-meter and three-meter springboard events. Sophomores Bryan Allen and Max Jenkins will compete on the 10-meter platform and freshman Greg Duncan is scheduled for the one-meter and three-meter springboard events.

UNC swimmers Hellen Moffitt and Caroline Baldwin will represent Team USA at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei City, Taiwan from August 20-27. Moffitt will swim the 50-meter and 100-meter butterfly events and Baldwin will compete in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events. UNC assistant coach Duncan Sherrard has been named to the coaching staff for the U.S. women's team at the event.
