Three Tar Heels Named WGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Three members of the University of North Carolina women's golf team were named Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars Wednesday. Junior Lexi Harkins and freshmen Mariana Ocano and Brynn Walker earned the honor.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics with a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.50 required for consideration.
Harkins, from Crystal Lake, Illinois, is majoring in mathematics with a minor in French. She competed in every tournament for the Tar Heels in 2016-17, finishing third on the team with a 74.67 stroke average. Most recently, Harkins recorded the lowest score at the NCAA Championships among her teammates to finish tied for 24th and lead her team to a ninth-place overall finish – the best team finish for the Tar Heels since 2011. This is the third-straight season she was named to the All-American Scholar Team.
Ocano, from St. Petersburg, Florida, competed in five tournaments for the Tar Heels in 2016-17, finishing the season with a 76.60 stroke average. Her best performance came at the River Landing Classic where she finished three over par and tied for fourth.
Walker, from St. David's, Pennsylvania, is majoring in media and journalism. She competed in every tournament for the Tar Heels in 2016-17, finishing the season with a 75.44 stroke average. Walker also helped the Tar Heels to their ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, finishing 74th individually.
