Carolina's head coach is working with USA Wrestling this summer.
UNC head wrestling coach Coleman Scott is a member of the USA Wrestling World Team coaching staff this summer as the team prepares for the World Championships in Paris, France. Throughout the next two months, Coach Scott will be providing updates on his work with the World Team and his travels to Colorado Springs, Madrid, Germany and, ultimately, Paris. Check back to GoHeels.com and on Twitter @UNCWrestling for the latest.
The national team arrived to Colorado Springs on Sunday June 2, and being the first camp everyone came in excited and ready to learn.Â
The coaches started Monday morning at 7 with a coaches meeting where we discussed what area of focus we would cover that day. At 8 a.m., the Senior, Junior, and Cadet World Teams watched film as a whole on the areas of focus for the day. We wanted to make sure the guys were able to understand the area of focus as well as see it in a live match. After that was a technique session where we covered our focus areas and we went about 90 minutes to make sure guys had optimal rest to come back at 4 p.m. for a technique/live wrestling practice. One of the best things to see is have all three age group world team members train side by side. It has helped our country tremendously in winning more and more world medals.Â
We came back Tuesday morning for coaches meeting at 7 and film technique at 8. Again we made sure guys saw the focus area for the day and we spent 90 minutes covering those areas. We all came back in the afternoon to go over the positions again and implement them in live wrestling. Tuesday being the Fourth of July, executive director Rich Bender invited all the coaches and their families over for a cookout. It was a great time catching up on things outside of the wrestling room - very neat to have some of the best coaches in the world all in one place having the same goal and that is to win world titles!Â
Wednesday we all came in at 9 a.m. for technique and we shortened the practice to about one hour. The guys got the rest of the day off for active recovery and we will meet back up Thursday morning for video review. The second half of this camp we will ramp up the live wrestling as we get closer to departing for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, Spain.Â
Thanks for reading and Go Heels!
