UNC Recruit Duncan Wins National Title in 3-Meter Diving

Tar Heel rallies on last two dives to claim crown.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - Incoming University of North Carolina freshman diver won the U.S. Diving national champion in three-meter diving Friday night at the 2016 U.S. Diving Senior National Summer Championships being held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion at the Ohio State University.

Tar Heel fans can watch Duncan win the national championship between 9 and 11 p.m. Friday when the championships are shown tape delayed on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN).
"This was a crazy experience. I am so thankful for my coach Stephanie Sutton, and my family," said Duncan after winning his first senior-level national championship. "I wouldn't be here without them. And I am elated to come to UNC to train with Abel Sanchez and the whole team."
Duncan led early in the meet, relinquished the lead for one round, and then rallied on the fifth dive to retake the lead. He cemented his title with a tremendous final dive. Duncan is a native of Oakton, Va. and competes for Dominion Dive Club. He will enroll at Carolina on August 22.
"I couldn't be more excited to have Sean Burston placing ninth nad having the national champion in Greg Duncan compete tonight at the USA diving nationals," says UNC diving coach Abel Sanchez. "UNC is so lucky to get a quality diver like Greg Duncan beginning later this month. Stephanie Sutton, his age group diving coach, has done an amazing job to develop a superb diver like Greg. I don't think UNC has ever had a national champion diver as an incoming freshman, as a current athlete, or a post-graduate athlete. Tonight was all about Greg Duncan and his age group coach Stephanie Sutton."
Duncan won with a score of 415.60. Jordan Windle of the Fort Lauderdale Dive Team took second place and Joseph Cifelli of Purdue University captured the bronze.
Duncan competed the 10 days of U.S. Diving Senior Nationals with a gold and silver medal on the senior level and a gold and a bronze in the 16-18 age group competition which was held last week.
"I have never seen a kid work as hard as Greg works. He had a vision in his mind, he knew what he wanted and he went after it. UNC will be more than blessed to have Greg Duncan. And I look forward to seeing him in 2020 Olympics trials," said Stephanie Sutton, Duncan's age group diving coach at the Dominion Diving Club in Virginia.
UNC junior Sean Burston also competed in the 14-man finals on Friday night and placed ninth with a score of 335.95 points. "Coming into finals I was a bit nervous about diving on my ankle," says Burston. "But Abel (Sanchez) kept me focused on trying not to overthink things and to just do what I know how to do. Now I'm looking forward to getting my ankle healthy so I can have a successful college season alongside our incoming freshman Greg Duncan and the rest of the crew."
