Blumberg Earns Spot In US Open Qualifying Draw

William Blumberg, a rising sophomore at UNC, has been awarded a wild card entry into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, which begins Tuesday, Aug. 22, at at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Blumberg, from Greenwich, Conn., was named the 2017 ITA National Rookie of the Year and earned All-America honors in singles and doubles in his first year on the Tar Heel men's tennis team. He has followed an outstanding collegiate season with an impressive summer one, and his play in Challenger events over the summer coupled with his runner-up finish in the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship earned him one of nine wild card entries into US Open qualifying.
The 2017 US Open runs Aug. 28 to Sept. 10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Blumberg also was announced on Wednesday as one of eight men's players selected for the fourth-annual American Collegiate Invitational at the U.S. Open. The single-elimination men's and women's singles tournaments will be played Sept. 7-9. Winners receive wild cards into the 2018 U.S. Open main draw or qualifying, depending on ranking in the summer of 2018.
Blumberg kicked off his summer by reaching the semifinals at the Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger in Binghampton, N.Y.
Later in June, he reached the quarterfinals at a Futures event in Tulsa, Okla.
