Moffitt places 6th in 50-meter butterfly.
TAOYUAN CITY, CHINESE TAIPEI - Caroline Baldwin and Hellen Moffitt were in action over the first two days of swimming competition Sunday and Monday at the 2017 World University Games. Competition is being held at the National Taiwan Sport University Swimming Pool.
Baldwin, a rising senior, won a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay and in the process set a new University long course record in the 100-meter freestyle as the leadoff leg on the relay.
Hellen Moffitt, a 2017 alumna, swam three times in the 50-meter butterfly over the first two days and earned a Top 6 finish in the event.
On Sunday, Moffitt swam twice in the 50-meter butterfly. She finished 12th in the preliminaries in 27.00 and moved up to a tie for fourth place in the semifinals at 26.66.
Also on Sunday, Baldwin was inserted into the U.S. lineup for the finals of the 400-meter freestyle relay. She led off the relay in 54.57 seconds and in the process broke the University long course record of 54.59 set by Erika Acuff Erndl at the 2009 U.S. Open. The U.S. relay claimed the bronze medal in a time of 3:40.09. Canada won the gold medal in the event and Russia was second.
On Monday, Baldwin swam twice in the 100-meter freestyle while Moffitt competed in the finals of the 50-meter butterfly. Moffitt finished sixth in the 50 fly finals in a time of 26.69 seconds.
Baldwin won both her preliminary and semifinal heats in the 100-meter freestyle to advance to Tuesday's final. Overall, she placed second in the prelims with a time of 55.18, winning heat seven. Only Russia's Mariia Kameneva had a faster time in prelims at 55.04. In the semifinals, Baldwin won heat 1 in a time of 54.95. The only faster time in the semifinals came Siobahn Bernadette Haughey of Hong Kong at 54.52 seconds.
