Women's Golf Announces Fall Schedule
August 22, 2017 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf program announced its fall schedule for the 2017-18 season Tuesday. The campaign begins with the Ocean Course Invitational (formerly the Cougar Classic) on Sept. 4-5 in Kiawah Island, S.C, a tournament where Carolina has found much success in the past.
In 2016, led by Kelly Whaley's historic performance, the Tar Heels won the Cougar Classic for the second time. Whaley tied Carolina records for individual round (66) and individual round vs par (-6) in the second round on her way to capturing the tournament's individual title. Carolina also won the Cougar Classic in 2010.
Carolina's fall is highlighted by the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, one of the top tournaments in the country since its inception in 1976. Carolina will host the invitational at UNC's Finley Golf Course, welcoming many top programs from around the nation Oct. 13-15. Fans are encouraged to attend and watch the Tar Heels compete in the only home tournament of the year.
The fall schedule also includes new stops at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., a tournament hosted by Vanderbilt University, and the Beach Blast in Los Cabos, Mexico, hosted by the University of Texas and Baylor University.
The Tar Heels return three starters from last year's squad that finished ninth at the NCAA Championships: senior Bryana Nguyen (Columbia, Md.), junior Kelly Whaley (Farmington, Conn.) and sophomore Brynn Walker (St. David's, Pa.). The ninth-place finish was Carolina's highest since 2011. Carolina also welcomes two talented newcomers in junior Celmentina Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela), a transfer from the 2016 national champion Washington Huskies, and freshman Ava Bergner (Ketsch, Germany).
