Scoring Barrage Lifts Carolina Over Providence
August 25, 2017 | Men's Soccer
ELON, North Carolina - A pair of goals in each half lifted No. 4 North Carolina to a thrilling 4-2 victory over 12th-ranked Providence on Friday in the season opener for both teams from Rudd Field.
Carolina (1-0) struck first in the 15th minute with John Nelson scoring on his first career shot with the Tar Heels. Cam Lindley started the play with one of his five first-half corners. The ball bounced around in the box and Nelson sent a left-footed rocket into the right corner.
Lindley made it 2-0 Tar Heels in the 33rd minute. Jeremy Kelly's flick found the oncoming Lindley right down the middle of the field and he made no mistake in notching his first collegiate goal.
Momentum came to an abrupt halt when Providence (0-1) scored the next two goals late in the first half to send the match tied going into halftime. Brendan Constantine cleaned up a deflection to make it 2-1.
Joao Serrano knotted the match in the 42nd minute off a converted free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
UNC came out of the locker room poised and regained possession for a majority of the second stanza. Jelani Pieters scored from an awkward angle off a feed from Zach Wright to send Carolina back ahead in the 63rd minute.
Wright continued to wreak havoc in the final third. He was dragged down in the box in the 86th minute, resulting in David October calmly converting from the penalty spot to make it 4-2 Tar Heels.
James Pyle made two saves in the winning effort between the pipes.
