Twichell wins one event, claims silver in two others
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. -Â Twelve swimmers represented the North Carolina Aquatic Club in the 2017 U.S. Swimming Open Wednesday-Sunday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
Â
Coached by UNC head coach Rich DeSelm and his assistant coaches Duncan Sherrard, Sean Quinn and Christy Garth, the NCAC swimmers turned in some fantastic performances during the five-day meet, including a new school record in the 200-meter breaststroke by rising senior Michael McBryan, a native of Doylestown, Pa.
Â
On Friday, McBryan finished ninth in both the preliminaries and the consolation final of the 200-meter breaststroke. Coming into the meet, he had a career best time of 2:15.95 in the event. He broke that in the preliminaries with a time of 2:15.91 before going more than a second faster in the consolation final by clocking a 2:14.84.
Â
McBryan's swim in the consolation final broke the second-oldest Tar Heel school long course record on the men's side. He toppled the previous mark of 2:14.92 set by UNC alumnus and current Tar Heel assistant coach Sean Quinn at the 2002 U.S. Nationals.
Â
Ashley Twichell, a Duke alumna who lives in Apex, N.C. and swims for NCAC, won the 800-meter freestyle at the event in 8:30.63. She also placed second in the 400-meter freestyle at 4:10.89 and on Sunday copped another silver medal finish in the 1500-meter freestyle at 16:10.99.
Â
Last month, Twichell had won gold and silver medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary in open water swimming events. She was coached in those events by a U.S. staff that included Tar Heel head coach DeSelm.
Â
Other UNC swimmers competing at the U.S. Open included sophomore Brooke Bauer, junior Noah Cairns, junior Austin Sellers, sophomore Susanna LaRochelle, sophomore Reni Moshos, sophomore Greg Brocato, junior Zhada Fields, senior Katie Ford and senior J.T. Casey. Will MacMillan, who swims at Stanford and is the son of UNC alumna Laurie Potter MacMillan, also represented NCAC, his home club in Chapel Hill.
