Griffin Opens With 70 to Lead Tar Heels
Senior Ben Griffin is tied for 14th after an opening round 70 and the Tar Heels are tied for 10th place after 18 holes at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois.

Friday's play was the first of three rounds at the Olympia Fields Country Club's north course. Second round play continues on Saturday.

Griffin had five birdies in his round, but bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes to finish at even par. Seniors William Register and Jose Montaño posted 72 and 75, respectively, and juniors Joshua Martin and Preyer Fountain added a 73 and 75. Register was four over through 12 before firing birdies on three consecutive holes.

The Tar Heels are 10 shots behind co-leaders Alabama, Oklahoma State and Baylor, who each shot even-par 280s. Oklahoma State's Zach Bauchou opened with a 6-under 64. He leads three players by two strokes.
