Moffitt Leads UNC Affiliated Selections To National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming Friday announced the 115 members of the 2017-18 National Team, which honors the nation's top swimmers for their performances this year.
The organization also announced its list of National Team coaches as well on Friday. The University of North Carolina coaching staff is represented by Tar Heel head coach Rich DeSelm and assistant coach Sean Quinn.
The University of North Carolina swimming program is represented on the National Team by 2017 alumna Hellen Moffitt who had the fifth fastest time of the year in USA Swimming ranks in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 58.24 at USA Nationals.
DeSelm also earned national coaching honors for his efforts with North Carolina Aquatic Club swimmers Chip Peterson in 10-kilometer open water swimming and with Ashley Twichell in 10-kilometer opening water swimming. Twichell also qualified in the 800-meter freestyle and 1500-meter freestyle.

The complete USA Swimming National Team roster, which is comprised of the top six swimmers in each individual Olympic event, can be found online at usaswimming.org.
"USA Swimming enjoyed outstanding performances across the board this summer at the FINA World Championships, World University Games and domestically," said Frank Busch, USA Swimming National Team Director. "It was a tremendous first year of the Olympic quad for Team USA swimmers, and these athletes will look to build on these successes as they approach the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo."
The United States won a record 38 medals in the pool competition – and added three more medals open water events – at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary. Just last week, American athletes earned 28 medals at the World University Games in Taipei and 32 medals at the FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis.

Leading the 12-member Open Water National Team are individual FINA World Championships medalists Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y./North Carolina Aquatic Club) and Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Team Santa Monica/Northwestern), who earned 5-kilometer gold and 10K silver, respectively, this summer at Lake Balaton, Hungary. Twichell also earned National Team honors in the women's 800m and 1500m free.
Benefits offered to USA Swimming National Team members include reimbursement for travel to USA Swimming arena Pro Swim Series meets and training camp opportunities. Select athletes are eligible for monthly assistance and elite athlete health insurance. A full list of opportunities available to members of the National Team is available online at usaswimming.org.
