Carolina Hosts Duke In Earliest Ever Meeting

CHAPEL HILL ---Â Carolina returns to conference action to face one of its oldest rivals when the Tar Heels host Duke Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Kenan Stadium. The game, which will be televised by ESPNU, marks the earliest date for the rivalry contest in series history.

BATTLE FOR THE VICTORY BELLÂ
• The winner of Saturday's game will receive the coveted Victory Bell, which has been presented annually to the winner of the Carolina-Duke football game since the 1940s. A large bell on wheels, this prize was originated by former Tar Heel cheerleader Norm Sper. Carolina has owned the bell for 23 of the last 27 seasons.
CAROLINA-DUKEÂ SERIES NOTES/CONNECTIONS
• North Carolina and Duke will renew their rivalry for the 104th time Saturday with the Tar Heels holding a 61-38-4 advantage. UNC has won two of the last three games between the two rivals, scoring 111 points in victories in 2014 and 2015. Duke won last year's meeting 28-27 in Durham.
• Carolina has had a player rush for 100 yards or more on 42 occasions vs. Duke, including nine of the last 12 meetings. Some highlights include:
- 2014: T.J. Logan rushed for 116 yards on 18 carries in a 45-20 win.
- 2011: Giovani Bernard had 165 yards and a touchdown in a 37-21 victory.
- 2010: Anthony Elzy rushed for 116 yards in a 24-19 victory in Durham.
- 2009: Ryan Houston ran for 164 yards on 37 carries in a 19-6 win.
• Eight of the last 12 games in the series have been decided by eight points or fewer.
• In the most recent meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina ran a flea-flicker for a touchdown on the first snap, scored on a last-second TD toss just before halftime and cruised to a 66-31 win. QB Marquise Williams threw for 404 of his school-record 494 yards by halftime. He threw for four touchdowns and ran for another, breaking the school passing mark in the opening minutes of the second half.
UNC picked up its first win of 2017 last week, a 53-23 victory at Old Dominion. Jordon Brown rushed 18 times for a career-best 123 yards and two of Carolina's six rushing touchdowns to pace a balanced attack. In his second career start, Chazz Surratt completed 16 of 24 passes for 259 and a touchdown. The redshirt freshman lefty also ran for a pair of scores.
Duke improved to 3-0 with a 34-20 win over Baylor. Shaun Wilson had scoring runs of 50 and 65 yards en route to 176 rushing yards against the Bears. Saturday's game at Kenan will be the Blue Devils' first conference contest of the season.
