Carolina Blanks Winthrop, 4-0
September 26, 2017 | Men's Soccer
GREENSBORO, North Carolina - Zach Wright and Lucas del Rosario each had a goal and an assist in sending No. 5 North Carolina to a 4-0 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night from UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Carolina improves to 9-1 with its seventh-straight victory, while Winthrop falls to 2-6-1.
After scoring the game winner in overtime this past Friday night at Virginia, Jelani Pieters' tap in just 85 seconds into the match put the Tar Heels ahead 1-0 with the earliest goal scored by the club this season.
Wright earned an assist with his patented skill work down the right flank. Once past the Winthrop defender, he delivered a perfect cross to Pieters for his sixth goal of 2017.
Wright's assist tied him with Cam Lindley for the team lead with seven, and was the 24th of his four-year career.
A poor clearing attempt in the 12th minute led directly to Wright scoring to make it 2-0. The Smithville, Texas, native collected Kenneth Perkinson's ball and promptly drilled a shot that ricocheted off the post and in for his first goal of the season.
A trio of late substitutions resulted in the third goal of the first half. Freshman Raul Aguilera played a through ball to classmate del Rosario and he made no mistake with his second goal of the season, both coming here at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Carolina continued to pepper Winthrop in the second half, and finally found its fourth in the 71st minute. Giovanni Montesdeoca converted his second of the season with a first touch goal from del Rosario.
UNC held a 17-0 edge in shots, and keepers Alec Smir and Drew Romig combined to register the shutout over the Eagles.
Carolina hosts NC State on Friday from Cary's WakeMed Soccer Park at 7 p.m.
