Somoano Wins 100th in Shutout Of NC State
September 29, 2017 | Men's Soccer
CARY, North Carolina - No. 5 North Carolina entered Friday night as the highest scoring team in the land. It only needed a single goal from Cam Lindley to gut out a 1-0 victory over rival NC State to give head coach Carlos Somoano the 100th victory of his career.
"The special part is having Dr. Miller, all the administrators and all the players here to enjoy this moment," said Somoano. "I don't coach to accumulate wins, I coach for our student-athletes to achieve their goals. And I can say that with 100 percent sincerity. I just want to see these guys enjoy their experience and love playing for and representing Carolina."
Somoano, the active leader in winning percentage among Division I soccer coaches, becomes the fourth coach at Carolina to record 100 career wins, joining Elmar Bolowich (280), Marvin Allen (174) and Anson Dorrance (172). Allen also registered No. 100 against NC State. Somoano is 100-23-20 in his seventh campaign in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels have won eight-straight matches and improve to 10-1 on the season, and has 12 points on four Atlantic Coast Conference matches to remain atop the Coastal Division. Meanwhile, NC State falls to an even 4-4-1 for the year and 1-3 in the Atlantic Division.
UNC enjoyed nearly all of the possession time in the first half, but could not break down a Wolfpack defense that consistently kept eight and nine men back to defend. The Tar Heels finally broke through late in the half when Alan Winn was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty when NC State's David Norris was shown a yellow card.
Lindley was deemed the penalty taker and he hit the back of the net in the 40th minute for a 1-0 Carolina lead on his third goal of the campaign.
Not much changed over the initial 25 minutes of the second stanza as Carolina continued to control the pace of the match. Jelani Pieters hit the post in the 63rd minute off a feed from Winn that would have given the Tar Heels a bit of breathing room down the stretch.
NC State finally broke out of its defensive shell and gave Carolina a scare in the final 10 minutes. Freshman keeper Alec Smir made two saves in an 11 second span in the 80th minute, and later sealed his second-consecutive shutout with a stop in the 84th minute off the foot of Manny Perez.
UNC is 9-1-1 in the last 11 meetings with the Wolfpack, and 55-21-12 in 88 all-time meetings with its long-time foe from Raleigh.
Carolina hosts James Madison in Cary on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
