Winn, del Rosario Score In 2-1 Victory At UNCG
September 4, 2017 | Men's Soccer
GREENSBORO, North Carolina - Freshman Lucas del Rosario scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute to lift No. 3 North Carolina to a 2-1 victory over UNCG on Monday night from UNCG Soccer Stadium.Â
Alan Winn made his senior season debut on Monday and wasted no time in scoring on his first shot of 2017. The Garland, Texas, native converted a left-footed shot in the 13th minute for his 13th career goal.Â
del Rosario, a reserve from nearby Durham, made it 2-0 Tar Heels with his first collegiate goal in the 69th minute. Cam Lindley began the play with a pass down the right flank to Jeremy Kelly, who maneuvered around a Spartan defender, reached the end line and delivered a cross into the box that del Rosario flicked home.
North Carolina (3-1) squeezed possession away from UNCG for large chunks of the second half. Because of that propensity to keep the ball, the Tar Heels enjoyed a majority of the quality scoring chances in the final 45 minutes.
Winn totaled four shots in his debut, with two attempts on frame. Lindley, the team's shot leader in the early portion of the season, had five shots and Zach Wright was again dangerous in the final third with three shots that were saved by UNCG keeper Jon Milligan.
UNCG (0-3-1) got a goal from Alex Henderson in the 81st minute to make it a nail biter in the final minutes, but Carolina's defense held up for the win.Â
The Tar Heels enjoyed a 19-7 edge in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks. Drew Romig made four saves to register his first collegiate victory.Â
UNC opens ACC play at Pitt next Saturday at 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.Â
