The start of Alan Winn's senior season might not have gone according to plan, as an injury sidelined him for the North Carolina men's soccer team's first three games.
But Winn's first contest of the season couldn't have been scripted better.
In the 13th minute of Monday's 2-1 win over UNCG at UNCG Soccer Stadium, Winn evaded a defender before firing his first shot of the season with his left foot. The ball rolled past the goalkeeper and into the goal's far corner, giving third-ranked UNC an early 1-0 lead.
The goal marked the 13th of Allen's career. That's the most by any player on the Tar Heels' roster.
Winn finished with four shots, including two on goal, in his season debut. Freshman Lucas del Rosario also added a goal in the 69th minute, which proved to be the game-winner after UNCG scored in the 81st minute.
Bergner impresses in first tournament
In the first tournament of her UNC career, freshman Ava Bergner finished tied for 10th, helping steer the women's golf team to a three-way tie for fifth place at the Ocean Course Invitational in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
Bergner shot a 1-over-par 220 across the three rounds. Her performance was highlighted by a 3-under 70 in the second round, when the average score came in at 76.98.
Bergner tied for fourth in the field in par-4 scoring at even par. She also carded 11 birdies, tied for the fifth-most in the field and five shy of individual medalist Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest.
Women's soccer drops second match
The women's soccer team controlled possession for most of Thursday's match at Penn State. But the Nittany Lions did so in the opening minutes, and that ultimately proved costly for the Tar Heels.
No. 5 Penn State played aggressive early and quickly took the lead on a goal in just the seventh minute. Sixth-ranked UNC settled in after that, but it never could break through against the Nittany Lions' defense and fell 1-0.
The Tar Heels entered Thursday with a 46-18 edge over its opponents in shots on goal this season. But Penn State finished with a 6-2 edge in that category.
