CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's and 21st-ranked women's swimming and diving teams start 2018 with a tri-meet against Navy and Penn State on Saturday morning in Koury Natatorium at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
The Tar Heels last met the Midshipmen in January 2017 in Annapolis, Md., when the Tar Heels swept the Midshipmen with the men and women winning 170-130 and 179-119, respectively. The Heels last faced off with the Nittany Lions in January 2013, during the Heels' annual training trip to Naples, Fla. This will be the first year that the three teams meet in a tri meet and the first tri-meet at any venue for the Tar Heels since the 2015-16 campaign.
"It will add a higher level of competitiveness all around for all of us and should be a good test," Tar Heel head coach Rich DeSelm pointed out regarding the addition of Penn State to a traditional matchup with Navy. "We are looking forward to it."
Carolina's men's and women's swimming teams last competed at the Tennessee Invitational where the women placed third and the men placed fifth in late November/early December. Senior captain Caroline Baldwin claimed another University record at Tennessee by winning the 100-yard freestyle in 47.14 seconds. Junior Robyn Dryer acquired a personal best 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:16.25. The 21st-ranked Tar Heel women hold a 2-2 record while the men are 1-3 on the year.
Navy men's swimming team is 8-1 overall. The Midshipmen received their first loss of the season to Princeton last week by a narrow score of 151.5-148.5. The Navy women's side is undefeated at 8-0 overall. They return to the pool after a month hiatus, last facing Army West Point in early December and winning with a score of 223-77.
For the Nittany Lions, this Saturday's meet will be the first meet since the Ohio State Invitational in November where both Penn State men's and women's swimming teams finished seventh. The men's team holds a 1-5 record while the women's side is 0-6 on the season.
The Carolina diving contingent recently returned from training in Hawaii over the holiday break where they faced off with the University of Hawaii and the Badgers of Wisconsin. Maria Lohman won the one-meter and the three-meter springboard events with scores of 309.80 and 320.70, respectively. Sean Burston and Bryan Allen led the men's side placing first in the three-meter event and the 10-meter platform event with scores of 378.30 and 375.30, respectively.
"The kids did a lot of good diving, a lot of good training," said diving coach Abel Sanchez.
For the upcoming meet, Sanchez knows his teams are going to be tested.
"On the men's side, Navy has two really good men's divers," explained Sanchez. "Penn State has a really tough diver, he is from Spain and really good. The men have a challenge ahead of them. I think it will be a fun meet, always fun to compete. I am excited to see what happens."
Saturday's meet supports the Million Meals Challenge. Each donation of three or more can receive a $5 Harris Teeter Gift Card while supplies last. The Million Meals Challenge supports local families in need and helps the hungry. UNC is competing with Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest from now until March 8, 2018 to see which fans donate the most. All donations go to the North Carolina Food Bank.
"We are all for the Million Meal Challenge," DeSelm said. "I hope our fans step up. I hope we see some students here. It's a nice warm place to be for a couple hours. There are some great athletes in the pool from our team and the other teams. They'll see some great energy. They'll see some great swimming and diving."
